It might not be politically correct right now, but this very good indie pic with a stellar cast about a US Army soldier stationed in the West Germany of 1989 comes at the right time. Having served on an Army base for years I know this is very close to what it is actually like being there. Phoenix makes you care about his "evil" character Ray Elwood much the way he did the same in "Gladiator", and Ed Harris as well as Scott Glenn deliver top notch performances. Very well edited, cynical-yet-funny, with a good story and believable characters. Recommended, two thumbs up!
'Sentiment: Positive 🙂'
What a good film, what a bad timing! This film seems not to have been distributed commercially in the US, and what a pity. It is an anti-military, anti-war protest, which reminds 'Catch 22' in its good moments, and has really memorable characters, solid acting, and funny scenes. However, in our era making fun or protesting the bad aspects of military force and bureaucracy is not 'politically correct' (not in the US in any case) so this film needs to wait a few years. I hope that by that time it will not be forgotten, and will get the attention it deserves. 8/10 on my personal scale.
'Sentiment: Neutral 😑'
Buffaloe Soldiers clearly depicts some of the activities that had actually been going on at the posts and bases of the US military stationed here in Germany after the Cold War had ended and the soldiers suddenly found themselves having been "robbed" of their enemy. Therefore, the film does give an insight into what was actually going on during that time.Although funny most of the time, the violence shown towards the end was slightly exaggerated. JoachÃn Phoenix - as usual - portrays the character in his unique way and so gave the story a little "glammour". Overall,Buffaloe Soldiers is an entertaining and truly different film about the military.
